Pinot Noir - single vineyard, Los Carneros AVA

This is the wine that made Los Carneros famous, and it is also one of the most challenging varietals, both from the wine growing and wine making standpoint.  The grape is notoriously thin-skinned, and it is difficult to get all of its components integrated and in balance.  One of the first wines we produced, our Pinot Noir is consistent with the typical Los Carneros Pinot: silky fruit and oak balanced with a spicy black cherry note.  This is a light to medium-bodied wine. 

Merlot - single vineyard, Los Carneros AVA

Merlots from this region tend to be as bold as Cabernet Sauvignons.  We feel our Merlot is a reflection of Los Carneros.  A medium to full-bodied wine, it shows an earthy blackberry/ raspberry nose with medium tannins and slight herbaciousness.  We typically blend some Cabernet Franc and/or Cabernet Sauvignon to add structure and nuance to our Merlot. 

Cabernet Franc - Napa Valley, Los Carneros & Oak Knoll District AVA

Produced with fruit grown in both our Los Carneros and Oak Knoll District vineyards, Cabernet Franc is typically used as a blending wine.  Cabernet Franc lends its earthy bouquet, color and lower tannins to Cabernet Sauvignon.  We were so impressed with the lively, dancing quality of this grape that we decided to hail its merits by bottling it on its own.  The aromatics are so strong that this is one of those wines you taste before it reaches your mouth.  It is deep, rich, concentrated, and exciting.  Approximately 20% Cabernet Sauvignon is blended in for structure and weight.  Our production is small , usually under 300 cases.

Malbec - single vineyard, Los Carneros AVA

When we set out to make a Cabernet Sauvignon-based proprietary red wine, we planted Malbec for blending purposes.  It was so distinct and tasty on its own that we made 50 cases of Malbec in 1994.  We find this wine truly intriguing--it has strong exotic fruit flavors of blueberries and blackberries, with guava and mango tastes as it ferments.  One of its most unusual qualities is that its aroma is similar to a Gewurztraminer, a spicy white wine, but its color is deep purple and its tannins and weight are similar to Merlot.  This is an early maturing wine with powerful fruit.  We feel this wine reflects the Los Carneros region beautifully, with its tropical fruit qualities.

Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley, Los Carneros & Oak Knoll Dist. AVA

We went into business to make an affordable Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Bordeaux varietals in the traditional old world style.  Cabernet Sauvignon is what made Napa Valley famous, and our Cabernet is the wine we feel best represents us.  We typically blend with Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot for nuance and complexity, but in some years our Cabernet Sauvignon has been up to 98% that grape alone.  This wine is earthy, with blackberry and vanillin from the oak, hints of tobacco and a slightly herbacious quality.  This is our flagship wine, and we invite you to think of McKenzie-Mueller when you think of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
